Ultralight FAQ
Answers to general questions about ultralight airplanes.
Note: This FAQ only pertains to Ultralight Airplanes in the U.S.
Can I design my own Ultralight Airplane
Legally, Yes. In the US no license or certification is required of a designer to design an ultralight. Whether you should design an Ultralight Airplane is another matter.
Should I design my own Ultralight Airplane
If you can answer yes to all of the following questions then you might consider designing your own ultralight airplane.
Can you perform simple algebra math problems?
Can you perform simple geometry math problems?
Do you know or are you willing to learn aeronautics from books, videos and/or research papers.
Do you know or are you willing to learn static structural analysis from books and/or videos.
Do you give a good faith effort to determining the solution to problems before asking someone for help.
Do you verify advice from individuals before acting on it.
Can I build my own Ultralight Airplane
Legally, Yes. In the US no license or certification is required to build an ultralight airplane. In addition, the ultralight airplane does not require any certification, registration or inspection before flying.
Here are some things that you should do though:
Learn the "Best Practices" construction techniques for whatever materials you are using in your ultralight airplane
Have an experienced airplane builder examine your workmanship several times during the build
Gracefully accept any constructive criticism, verify the veracity of the claims and act on valid criticism.
Does the Ultralight Airplane Workshop design, build or restore weight shift or paraplane, lighter than air or helicopter ultralights?
At this time the Ultralight Airplane Workshop is concentrating on fixed wing, 2 or 3 axis controlled ultralights. A weight shift flying wing sailplane might be interesting though.
