UWS-1

Mission: Long duration on electric power

This design is a Federal Aviation Part 103 compliant (Ultralight Vehicle) airplane that is battery powered and propeller driven. The configuration is high wing conventional twin pusher with tricycle landing gear. Construction is vacuum infused carbon fiber composite.

UWS-2

Mission: Short Take Off and Landing

Future design project.

UWS-3

Mission: Thermal Soaring

Future Design Project

UWS-4

Mission:

FAA Part 103 Compliant Vehicle using aluminum construction, 2-cycle powered  and low drag (for an ultralight).

OpenVSP

Free and Open Source: OpenVSP is a parametric airplane configuration application. It knows the parameters to use for wings, fuselages, airfoils, propellers, nacelles, etc. It is much faster to draw an airplane than with CAD software. OpenVSP can also perform aerdynamic analysis on the airplane that you create.

Xflr5

Xflr5 is an airfoil design and airplane aerodynamic calculation application.

Simplified Aircraft Design for Homebuilders

Mr. Raymer has created a small book that is fully packed with the information and procedure you need to design your own conventionally configured light airplane. The math is all very simple and the procedure is straight forward.

SimplifiedDesignBook.jpg

Aerodynamics, Aeronautics and Flight Mechanics

This a great text book for learning aerodynamics. Although it has plenty of analytical equation for determining aerodynamics qualities, it also is modern in the sense that it provides information on programming either spreadsheets or writing a computer program for some situations. But it also provides simplified analysis. You can take your pick.

Airfoil Selection

Barnaby Wainfan guides you through the qualities of an airfoil and what to look for in an airfoil for your airplane design. In the process he also provides information that is very useful for airplane wing design.

GA Airfoils

Series of turbulent and laminar airfoils designed by Harry Riblet for light aircraft derived from the NACA 6X-XXX series airfoils.

PA250273.jpg

Evans Lightplane Designer's Handbook

Covers design equations (very little explanation) ,engine selection, propeller properties, material properties (metals, wood, composites), lander gear loads, structural loads explained, etc. Very good as a reference.

PA250272.jpg

Modern Aircraft Design, Vol. 1

Good over view of the airplane design process exploring various configurations and providing design examples. Recommended.

Dictionary of Aero Design Terminology

Angle of Attack

Symbol - (alpha)

The angle between the flying surface root chord line and the tip chord line.

Angle of Attach with transparent.png

Aspect Ratio

Symbol - AR, A

The ratio of the flying surface span (b) to it's chord (c). AR = b/c

AspectRation_range.png

Camber, Camber Line

Symbol - none

The camber is a line extending from the leading edge to the trailing edge of an airfoil, following a path at the mean distance between the top surface and bottom surface of the airfoil.

Chord, Chord Line

Symbol - c

The line connecting the farthest forward edge  (lead edge) of an airfoil to the farthest aft edge (trailing edge) of an airfoil.

Chord Line (1).png

Span

Symbol - b

Wingtip to wingtip distance.
