New Ultralight Designs and Design Resources
On this page you will find one section for each ultralight design. The current design is near the top of the page. Older designs are farther down the page.
Ultralight Airplane Workshop Airplane Designs
The Ultralight Airplane Workshop creates new ultralight airplane designs based on the mission for an ultralight.
UWS-1
Mission: Long duration on electric power
This design is a Federal Aviation Part 103 compliant (Ultralight Vehicle) airplane that is battery powered and propeller driven. The configuration is high wing conventional twin pusher with tricycle landing gear. Construction is vacuum infused carbon fiber composite.

Airplane Design Software
OpenVSP
Free and Open Source: OpenVSP is a parametric airplane configuration application. It knows the parameters to use for wings, fuselages, airfoils, propellers, nacelles, etc. It is much faster to draw an airplane than with CAD software. OpenVSP can also perform aerdynamic analysis on the airplane that you create.
Books on Airplane Design
Aerodynamics, Aeronautics and Flight Mechanics
This a great text book for learning aerodynamics. Although it has plenty of analytical equation for determining aerodynamics qualities, it also is modern in the sense that it provides information on programming either spreadsheets or writing a computer program for some situations. But it also provides simplified analysis. You can take your pick.
